During the week this site will move to a new provider. Doring this transition the site might be temporarily unavailable.
I’m moving from Webhost4life to Dreamhost for a number of reasons :
- Apache, so finally mod_rewrite, hence clean URL’s
- Linux based with SSH access, anything a nerd could wish for
- Support for Ruby/Rails
- Create your own subversion repositories
Webhost4life appears to be very cheap, but in reality you often pay extra. For instance, I wanted to add a second domain (flowability.com) to my account : pay up. It was even registered by the same company, Webhost4life, for which I obviously had paid. Would you like to have e-mail on said domain (my demands tend to be fairly exotic), then it will also cost extra. The final drop was when I wanted to put an rdf file (FOAF). The server kept giving me a 404, even tough the file was clearly present. I opened a support ticket and swiftly came the answer : “No MIME type has been configurder for the rdf file type, that’s why IIS is giving you a 404. To add MIME types, you need a more expensive hosting plan.”
The site Railshosting.org has made a nice deal with Dreamhost, using the promocode 50OFFRAILS you get 50$ off on any hostig plan. I got another 20% discount by ordering 2 years of hosting up front. The result is about 140$, or 5.83$ a month. Not bad I’d say.

I think dreamhost has a nice package…
But you could have saved more money! DH gives a $90 reduction on promocodes. The *creator* of the promocode decides how much of that goes to you, and how much to themselves. So, after some googling around, you can find DH promocodes for the full $90 reduction.
It’s a bit of a scam, really
But you still got a good deal of course.
